Across the country, literacy nonprofits are changing lives every day. We’re honored to shine a light on their incredible work—stories filled with hope, resilience, and meaningful impact. This space is dedicated to sharing their efforts and honoring the difference they’re making in their communities.
Lead to Read KC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing children's literacy in Kansas City by mobilizing community volunteers and implementing targeted programs. Their initiatives aim to support the social, emotional, and reading skills essential for student success.
One of their primary programs is Reading Mentoring, where adult volunteers, known as Reading Mentors, engage in weekly one-on-one reading sessions with first through third-grade students during the lunch hour. This consistent interaction fosters reading proficiency and builds meaningful relationships.
Lead to Read KC is dedicated to transforming Kansas City into a community where all students thrive academically and personally through unparalleled access to reading resources, mentorship and support.
Mauricio Bernal read with a Lead to Read KC Reading Mentor at Whittier Elementary in 2011. Now he's studying at UMKC. We think you'll love hearing his story.
